Years ago, a farmer taught me a way to stack bales so that I could get exactly 50 bales in my 8' pickup truck bed. No need to count, and it has proven to be a pretty stable method of stacking with the use of two ropes as tie downs.
The bales shown aren't exactly to scale, and the second layer extends out the sides of the bed a little.
